Harmonica Dean - March 19, 2009

Harmonica Dean passed away last night after fighting a 4 year battle to cancer. He was somewhere around 56 years old. He got himself out of bed Feb 7th to come and play our last gig together. It was a benefit for cancer research at Founders Park.
You couldn't forget Dean...
At 6ft 7in wearing a big brown leather hat and full on biker attire he would quietly walk up the stairs at Rum Runners and sit in and play from his heart on the Harp for a couple hours. Then after the gig he would pay his tab, ask it anyone wanted to go fishing then jump on his Harley and head off to find a bridge and cast for snook until the morning sun came up. He had a great sense of humor although he didn't speak much and he played his harmonica with anyone and everyone who enjoyed him sitting in. To those who knew Dean before he had cancer, I hope all is forgiven. Dean was lucky to have a caring woman in his life and his last hours. God bless you Moe.
Rest in Peace Dean ... Barstool Sailing, Harmonica Dean was a fisherman who drank and navigated Island Life...

Gigging at the Green Turtle in Islamorada - February 1, 2009

I landed a gig at the Turtle on Saturdays. The Green Turtle...the oldest establishment in Islamorada. A history of great food and decades of incredible musicians have played The Turtle. I'm happy to admit it has a great vibe. Dave Feder is entertaining the crowd on Friday nights. Dave is ridiculously talented and just when you think it couldn't get anymore amazing his prodigy son Nyan shows up an they light up the place like no other. It is turning into a fantastic late night hangout. Tricia and Eric are behind the bar on Fri/Sat always smiling. Come hang out!

Goodbye to Jenny - January 30, 2009

Sailing the BVI"s - January 7, 2009

Ending a crappy year 2008...I had the opportunity to go sailing for the first time in the Virgin Islands. American and British...
I knew it was going to be a great time traveling when Nomadic Chris stopped in off the road, sat down in my lazy boy and asked what I had going on the last week of December. I am always gigging. Addicted to the stage...completely.
Taking the time off was life changing and I am thankful for the invite.
Check out the pics when you can...

Big Pine Key Offshore 12/20 7:48 AM 12/21/2008

Solo trip, started out by loading up the well with ballyhoo and 200 or so pilchards, then headed offshore looking for sails and whatever else that was hungry. Found beautiful water east of Big Pine Shoal, clean sargasso weed, very little bay grass, and an east bound current. Saw frigates working but nothing productive underneath. Set a 4 bait spread of 3 hoo and big pilchard. After an hour of moving through 160' to 180', had a sail in the spread and he ate the right rigger....raced down from the tower, dropped it back, had him on for 15 seconds or so, two jumps and he spit the bait. Actually got back a scaled, still twitching hoo. A short time later, had a double on fat blackfins on the left rigger and left flat, the rigger bait on my light 25# conventional looked like it was going to get dumped, so that's the rod I grabbed first. I tried to wind on the flat and fight the fish on the other, ended up losing the one on the flat. Here's the BFT I managed to catch.

Started moving inshore to see if the sails were in on the reef edge, got ambushed by decent sized king macks on the way, they cut off three of the baits, but one of them was hooked right in the corner of the mouth, so landed him on 50# flouro.

Gaff shot right through the meat, just how I like it.

Saw a free jumper in around 100', fast idled over and dropped back two fresh baits, and within 60 seconds or so, the sail was in the spread and ate the left flat right off the transom. Had this fish on for a little over a minute or so, just past his first run and was starting to gain line, then the hook pulled. So, 0 for 2 on sails.

Beautiful day, great conditions especially with little to no bay grass. Gulfstream is close, the edge looks fishy. Catch'em up!
